🩵SILVERSIDE GUIDE & FAQ
SILVERSIDE GOTCHA DAY GUIDE **pending update**
Healthy puppies, balanced temperaments & complete transparency- proven, not merely promised. We're so glad you're here! Whether you're just beginning your search for an Australian Shepherd or you've already fallen in love with one of our little “potatoes,” we're truly honored that you're considering Silverside. Adding a puppy is not only a decision about the next few weeks- it is a commitment to the next 12–15 years or more. We believe you deserve to understand exactly who raised your puppy, how their parents were selected, what health testing was completed, how the litter was cared for, and what support will remain available after Gotcha Day.At Silverside Aussies, we don't believe in simply selling puppies- we believe in creating lifelong partnerships. Every breeding decision, health test, temperament evaluation, and puppy placement is made with one goal in mind: producing healthy, confident Australian Shepherds and helping each one find the family where they can thrive for life.🐾 Silverside Highlights at a Glance💯 Standard Australian Shepherds- typically around 40–60 pounds and 18–22 inches at the shoulder.📜 AKC & ASDR registered parents with companion puppies placed on Limited Registration with AKC title reimbursement.🩻 OFA & CHIC health testing including hips, elbows, eyes and other evaluations appropriate to each dog.🧬 Comprehensive DNA screening for inherited health risks, breed verification, coat/body traits and informed pairing decisions.👀 Individual OFA CAER eye examinations for every puppy before final selections and Gotcha Day.🏆 AKC-titled parents evaluated for trainability, temperament and their ability to work with their people & AKC-title Reimbursement for qualifying titles earned.❤️ Temperament-first breeding decisions with health, structure, movement and versatility considered alongside personality.🏡 Puppies raised as part of our family with daily handling, socialization, enrichment, grooming and real household experiences.🩺 Multiple veterinary evaluations plus age-appropriate vaccination, deworming and microchipping before going home.📸 Detailed puppy profiles & pup-dates including individual photo albums, growth information and medical records whenever available.🥈 Comprehensive 2-year Wellness Warranty subject to the requirements and remedies in our Puppy Contract.♾️ Lifetime Silverside support for every puppy or dog we produce- no matter their age, circumstances or who reaches out on their behalf.🌱 Our PhilosophyWe love Australian Shepherds- not only because they're beautiful, but because of who they are. Their intelligence, loyalty, versatility, goofy personalities and incredible ability to become true members of the family are what captured our hearts, and they continue to guide every decision we make. Our goal has never been to produce the most puppies or chase every popular trend. We are committed to raising well-rounded Australian Shepherds with the health, structure and balanced temperaments to succeed in many kinds of homes- from active adventure partners and performance prospects to devoted family companions with a wonderful “off-switch.”For us, responsible breeding begins long before puppies are born. It starts with living with our dogs, knowing their personalities, maintaining routine veterinary care, studying their pedigrees, completing comprehensive health testing, earning titles, and thoughtfully choosing pairings that complement one another. Only then do we pour that same time and attention into every puppy from birth through Gotcha Day.Most importantly, we believe in transparency. We want you to understand not only what we do, but why we do it. Every parent and puppy has a detailed profile whenever possible, with links to albums, testing, records and the information we would want to see if we were choosing a breeder ourselves.❤️ The Right Breeder Matters as Much as the Right PuppyEvery breeder has a different philosophy, and Silverside will not be the perfect fit for every family- and that's okay. We would much rather answer your questions honestly, help you make an informed decision, or point you toward another ethical breeder than place one of our puppies in the wrong home.Every breeder can promise healthy puppies, wonderful temperaments and lifetime support. We believe those things should be supported by public health records, thoughtful policies, detailed puppy care and a relationship that continues long after your puppy leaves our home.🔍 Please Verify Health Testing YourselfWhether you choose Silverside or another breeder, ask for the parents' registered names and search the OFA database for yourself before purchasing. Look at the actual tests and results- not only a logo, screenshot or claim that the dogs are “clear.” An ethical breeder should be comfortable sharing results, limitations and the reasons behind each pairing.
More than a beautiful dog... an intelligent, devoted lifestyle companion. It is easy to fall in love with an Australian Shepherd's stunning coat, expressive eyes and playful personality. We certainly did! But before falling in love with a puppy, it is important to understand what everyday life with an Aussie can really look like.Australian Shepherds are intelligent, versatile and deeply connected to their people. They can excel as family companions, hiking partners, therapy dogs, performance dogs, farm dogs and just about anything else you can dream up. They are usually happiest when they are included in daily life and given both companionship and direction.❤️ An Aussie May Be a Wonderful Fit If...You want a companion who enjoys learning and being involved with the family. You are willing to provide regular exercise, mental enrichment, training and continued socialization. You enjoy including your dog in everyday activities, travel, outdoor adventures or dog sports. You appreciate a dog that is intelligent, expressive, loyal and often a little too clever for their own good. 😉You are prepared to guide a puppy patiently through biting, chewing, potty training, fear periods and adolescence. You are looking for a relationship with your dog- not simply a pet who lives in the background.🤔 An Aussie May NOT Be the Best Fit If...We love Australian Shepherds, but we will also be the first to say they are not the right breed for everyone. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting an easier or more independent breed; those qualities simply may not match what Aussies were developed to be.You need a dog who is content spending most of every day alone. You are looking for very low exercise, minimal training or little mental stimulation. You want a low-maintenance or non-shedding coat. You are uncomfortable setting consistent rules, boundaries and routines. You do not want a dog who may notice- and react to- every change in the environment. You are choosing primarily for appearance without flexibility for the puppy whose temperament best fits your home.🏡 Do Aussies Need a Farm or Working Home? No. An Australian Shepherd does not need livestock or a farm to have a happy, fulfilling life. They do need purpose, companionship and appropriate outlets for their bodies and brains. For one family, that may mean hiking, training classes and weekend adventures. For another, it may mean daily walks, trick training, scent games, fetch and being the very best supervisor of household chores.Energy also varies from dog to dog and pairing to pairing. Some Aussies are highly driven athletes; others are moderate-energy companions who are happiest following their people and then settling nearby. That is exactly why we plan pairings carefully and wait to learn each puppy's individual temperament before final selections.👨👩👧👦 Are Aussies Good Family Dogs? They can be exceptional family dogs in homes prepared to train and supervise them. Aussies are often affectionate, loyal and wonderful with respectful children, but puppies are still puppies: they bite, scratch, jump, chase movement and may try to herd running children. Babies, toddlers and young puppies should never be left together without close adult supervision. The same thoughtful introduction applies to other dogs, cats and household animals. Many Aussies live beautifully in multi-pet homes, but individual temperament, existing pack dynamics, safe management and slow introductions matter more than breed or gender alone.🪮 Do Aussies Shed? Are They Hypoallergenic?Australian Shepherds are not hypoallergenic. They have a double coat and do shed, with heavier seasonal coat changes and moderate shedding in between. Regular brushing- usually once or twice each week, with more attention during coat blow- helps prevent matting and keeps the skin and coat healthy. Their coat should not be shaved unless medically necessary.😂 The Honest Reality of PuppyhoodYour puppy will have accidents. They will teethe on your hands, steal socks, wake you up at inconvenient hours, turn ordinary household objects into toys and occasionally make you question your life choices. None of that means you have a bad puppy. It means you have...a puppy. The wonderful adult dogs you admire did not become wonderful by accident. Someone invested the time to train them, socialize them, meet their needs and remain consistent through the difficult stages. We give every puppy the strongest foundation we can; their family must continue building on it.⏰ Time, Training & Financial CommitmentThe purchase price is only the beginning. Families should plan for quality food, routine veterinary care, vaccines and preventatives, training, grooming supplies, enrichment, boarding or pet care, and unexpected emergencies. Pet insurance or a dedicated emergency fund can make a frightening situation much easier to manage.Training does not end after puppy class. Aussies are smart enough to learn wonderful habits- and smart enough to invent less-helpful ones when left without direction. Fortunately, most love learning with their people. Short, positive training sessions woven into daily life can be just as valuable as formal classes.❤️ Dogs Do Not Need Perfect OwnersThey need committed ones. You will make mistakes. Your puppy will make mistakes. Life will get busy, and some stages will be harder than expected. The goal is not perfection- the goal is patience, progress and a willingness to ask for help before a small concern becomes a much bigger one.Still smiling? Wonderful!! We cannot wait to learn more about the life you hope to build with your future Aussie.
Start with the parents and pairing- then get to know each puppy as an individual.Finding the right puppy starts long before Puppy Selection Day. Every litter is thoughtfully planned by comparing the parents' health, temperament, structure, movement, pedigrees, size and the qualities each dog may contribute. That means every pairing can have its own strengths, energy range and overall “feel.”We encourage families to meet our dogs through their profiles and compare planned pairings before focusing on a particular puppy. Each parent's page includes the information we want buyers to be able to verify for themselves, including personality, photos, registration, testing, accomplishments and past puppies whenever available.📏 What Size Are Silverside Aussies? We raise standard Australian Shepherds. Our adults are generally around 40–60 pounds and approximately 18–22 inches at the shoulder. Genetics, sex, bone, build, nutrition and individual growth all affect adult size, so estimates are never guaranteed. The parents and older relatives are usually the best guide for what a particular litter may produce.🎨 Coat Colors & MarkingsOur pairings may produce blue merle, red merle, black tri and red tri puppies. The amount of white and copper trim can vary tremendously- even within the same litter. One puppy may have a full collar and bright facial markings, while a sibling has only tiny white toes or a small patch on the chest. That wonderful variation is part of what makes Aussies so special.Color genetics allow us to estimate possibilities, but Mother Nature does not accept custom orders. We can never guarantee a particular color, pattern, marking or amount of white before puppies are born.👀 Eye ColorsAussie eyes may be brown, amber, hazel, blue, marbled, split or two different colors. Puppies usually open their eyes around two weeks, but color can continue developing long after that. Spartan carries two blue-eye trait variants, so blue eyes are especially common in his puppies; however, eye color is never guaranteed and should not outweigh health or temperament when choosing a lifelong companion.🐕 Long Tails, Natural Bobtails & Rare Docking ExceptionsWE LOVE NATURAL TAILS. Silverside stopped routine tail docking in 2021 so our puppies could keep the expressive tails they were born with. Depending on the mother, a litter may include long-tailed puppies, Natural Bobtails (NBTs), or both. When one parent carries the NBT gene, each puppy generally has an independent chance of inheriting a naturally shortened tail.Every puppy's tail length is listed clearly in their profile. Long tails are fully welcome in sports such as agility, rally, obedience, dock diving, Fast CAT, barn hunt, scent work and many other performance events. Families pursuing AKC conformation should understand that current breed-ring requirements may make an appropriate NBT or professionally docked prospect necessary. We do not routinely dock tails. A licensed veterinarian may shorten a crooked or compromised NBT for medical welfare during the early puppy examination. Any non-medical exception would have to be discussed and approved within the very short veterinary procedure window and is considered only for a genuinely appropriate conformation prospect; it is rare and never guaranteed.🐾 DewclawsOur veterinarian evaluates every puppy's dewclaws. Rear dewclaws are removed within 5 days of birth & detached or problematic front dewclaws may be removed only when recommended. We generally preserve functional front dewclaws because dogs use them for grip, balance, climbing and holding objects. Any procedure is performed by a licensed veterinarian and documented in the puppy's records.♂️ Male or Female? There is no universally “better” gender. Individual temperament matters far more. Some families appreciate the typically steadfast, openly affectionate nature often associated with males; others prefer the more independent, focused style often associated with females. Existing pack dynamics may also matter, especially when a resident dog has strong same-sex preferences. We are happy to consider gender, but we encourage families to remain flexible when possible. The puppy whose confidence, energy and social style best fit your home may not be the gender you originally pictured.🐶 Older Puppies & Retired AdultsMost Silverside puppies are chosen before they are old enough to go home, but occasionally an older puppy or retired adult may become available. Adults are placed only when we believe another home would give that individual dog the happiest next chapter. Their needs, personality, training, health information and ideal home will be shared honestly, and placement decisions are made just as carefully as puppy placements.
Ethical breeding means evaluating the whole dog- not checking one convenient box.Beautiful puppies are everywhere. Healthy, predictable, thoughtfully bred puppies require years of planning. You will often see phrases such as “health tested,” “DNA tested” or “vet checked.” All of those things can be valuable, but they do not mean the same thing. A routine veterinary examination cannot evaluate inherited orthopedic risk. A DNA panel cannot evaluate hips, elbows, eye health, structure, movement or temperament. Ethical, responsible breeding requires us to look at the whole dog.❤️ Temperament Comes FirstOur dogs are our family, and we first have to love living with them. Before a dog is considered for breeding, we evaluate their temperament, stability, trainability, structure, movement, overall soundness and how they interact with people, dogs and everyday life. Only dogs we genuinely believe can contribute something valuable to the next generation proceed through our health-testing and breeding program.🩻 OFA & CHIC Health TestingOur breeding dogs complete the health testing recommended for Australian Shepherds, with additional evaluations added when appropriate for the dog and their age. Public results include:OFA hip evaluationOFA elbow evaluationOFA CAER eye examinationOFA dentition certificationOFA patella evaluationAdditional cardiac, thyroid or other evaluations when appropriateRoutine veterinary wellness care throughout the dog’s lifeA CHIC number is not an award and does not mean a dog is “perfect.” It shows that the dog completed the parent club's recommended health testing and that the results were made publicly available. We value CHIC because transparency allows families to independently verify the information instead of simply taking a breeder's word for it.👀 Why Every Puppy Receives an Individual OFA CAER Eye ExamSome inherited or developmental eye abnormalities may not be visible during a routine puppy wellness examination. That is why our breeding dogs receive OFA CAER eye examinations and every Silverside puppy is examined individually by a qualified veterinary ophthalmology provider before final puppy selections and Gotcha Day.The examination gives each family meaningful information about their own puppy- not only the parents. Results are included with the puppy's records and are considered alongside the veterinary wellness examination and temperament evaluation before selection.🧬 Comprehensive DNA, Breed & Trait ScreeningOur dogs receive comprehensive DNA screening for inherited health conditions, breed verification, coat color and body traits. Many have been tested through more than one laboratory for additional information and confirmation. Depending on the laboratory's current panel, a single report may screen hundreds of variants. Results such as Clear, Carrier and At Risk/Affected describe the copies of a specific variant a dog carries. A healthy Carrier can often be responsibly bred to a Clear mate without producing Affected puppies for that condition. The goal is not to remove every Carrier from the breed- which can unnecessarily shrink genetic diversity- but to understand the results and choose compatible pairings so puppies are not expected to inherit two disease-causing copies for conditions we can test.DNA knowledge continues to evolve, but testing cannot predict every illness a dog may ever experience, and new variants are added over time. We continue researching, updating records and using every reliable tool available to make the most informed decisions possible.🏆 Why Titles Matter- even for Family CompanionsTitles are not simply bragging rights. They are another way to evaluate trainability, willingness to engage, confidence and the ability to work with a handler in unfamiliar situations. A title alone does not make a dog worthy of breeding, but it adds another piece to the larger picture of health, temperament, structure and real-world ability.🥈 Our 2-Year Wellness WarrantyEvery Silverside companion puppy is protected by our comprehensive 2-year Wellness Warranty, described in the Puppy Contract. The warranty addresses qualifying life-threatening congenital defects and provides the remedies and requirements that apply to each claim. To keep the extended warranty in effect, the puppy must be examined by the buyer's licensed veterinarian within the time stated in the Contract- currently within 10 days after transfer. We also offer limited prescription reimbursement for qualifying parasites identified during the puppy's initial post-transfer veterinary examination, as detailed in the Contract. If the unthinkable happens and your puppy is diagnosed with a condition covered by the Puppy Contract, we want your family to have options. Depending on the circumstances, you may be eligible for reimbursement toward approved medical care or professional training, or you may choose an available replacement remedy. Most importantly, we will never require you to give up a dog you love simply to receive eligible support..No responsible breeder can guarantee that a living animal will never experience illness, injury or an unexpected condition. Health testing does not create perfection. It gives us better information, helps us avoid preventable risks and allows us to stack the odds in favor of healthier generations. Our promise is to remain transparent, keep learning and stand behind our program according to the written Contract. 🔍 Please Verify Health Testing YourselfWhether you choose Silverside or another breeder, ask for the parents' registered names and search the OFA database before purchasing. Look at the actual tests and results- not only a logo, screenshot or claim that the dogs are “clear.” An ethical breeder should be comfortable sharing results, limitations and the reasons behind each pairing.
The first eight weeks build a foundation- but the family continues the lifelong work.Genetics help shape who a puppy may become, but they are only part of the story. From birth, puppies are constantly learning from their mother, littermates, people and environment. Every safe, positive experience helps build confidence, resilience, curiosity and the ability to adapt to life beyond our home. Our puppies are raised as part of our family- not isolated from everyday life. We spend hours with each litter every day, tracking health and development while gradually introducing experiences appropriate to the puppies' age and individual readiness.📈 Daily Monitoring & Weight TrackingDuring the earliest weeks, small changes matter. We weigh and monitor puppies closely, document development and watch nursing, hydration, growth and behavior. Detailed records help us notice concerns early and give our veterinarian more useful information when guidance is needed.🫀 Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)During the appropriate neonatal window, puppies participate in brief, carefully controlled Early Neurological Stimulation exercises. ENS introduces mild, age-appropriate challenges intended to support the developing nervous system and the puppy's ability to recover from manageable stress. These exercises are only a few seconds long and never replace normal cuddling, maternal care or everyday handling.👃 Early Scent Introduction (ESI)Puppies are also introduced to a variety of safe scents during the early developmental period. ESI encourages use of the puppy's strongest newborn sense and gives us another opportunity to observe curiosity and individual responses. It is one small piece of a much larger socialization and enrichment program.🌎 Socialization, Desensitization & EnrichmentAs puppies mature, their world expands gradually. Experiences may include different surfaces, sounds, household activity, toys, problem-solving opportunities, gentle handling by different people, individual time away from littermates, age-appropriate outdoor play and exposure to normal grooming and care.Household noises, voices, music and age-appropriate sound exposureDifferent textures, surfaces, objects and movementPositive interaction with adults and children when safe and appropriateIndividual handling as well as play with littermatesSimple confidence-building and problem-solving activitiesIntroductions to collars, leashes, crates, car rides and travel routinesWeekly brushing, nail care, bathing and blow-drying experiencesAppropriate boundaries, recovery time and plenty of sleepMore is not always better. Socialization is not flooding a puppy with constant activity or forcing them to endure scary situations. We work to create positive, manageable experiences while respecting each puppy's developmental stage and personality.🩺 Veterinary Care Before Gotcha DayPuppies receive veterinary care early in life and again before going home. Care includes physical wellness examinations, age-appropriate deworming and vaccination, microchipping and any treatment our veterinarian recommends. Every puppy also receives an individual OFA CAER eye examination around the time of final evaluations.Families receive the puppy's available health and treatment records so their veterinarian can continue care without guessing what has already been completed.📸 Follow the Little Potatoes as They GrowEach puppy and litter receives a profile and photo album. We share regular photos, videos, growth information, milestones and pup-dates so Waitlist families can enjoy the journey and learn far more than what can be seen in a single posed picture.❤️ What Our Program Can- and Cannot- DoWe work hard to provide a thoughtful foundation, but an eight-week-old puppy is not a finished dog. Puppies do not leave fully potty trained, perfectly crate trained or ready to navigate the world without guidance. Their most important socialization, training and adolescent stages continue after Gotcha Day.Our job is to start the foundation. Your job is to keep building through positive training, safe exposure, appropriate exercise, routine veterinary care and a relationship based on trust. Together, that makes a pretty amazing team.
Ask questions, submit an inquiry, join the Waitlist- or simply follow along until the timing is right. Are you ready to welcome a puppy now? Planning for later? Still deciding whether an Aussie is the right fit? We created one Inquiry form with different paths so getting started is simple: complete our Silverside Inquiry. The inquiry helps us learn about your household, lifestyle, experience, goals, and what you hope to find in your future Aussie. It also gives you an opportunity to review our program, pricing, Contract, Waitlist process, and expectations before deciding whether Silverside feels like the right fit.You do not need to know exactly which puppy, litter, color, gender, or timeframe you want before applying. Share whatever preferences you currently have, and you can update them later as your plans change or new litters are announced.Once we receive your inquiry, we’ll review it carefully and reach out with any questions or next steps. If approved, we’ll help you:Reserve an available puppy, when appropriate; orJoin our Master Waitlist with a $500 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT for a future puppy.Submitting an inquiry does not obligate you to purchase a puppy, and approval does not guarantee that a particular puppy will remain available. However, we must approve your home before accepting a deposit or reserving a puppy or Waitlist position.Ready to begin? Complete the Silverside Inquiry, and we’ll take it from there! 🐾❓ Ask a Question or 💌 Subscribe to Aussi-eNewsNot quite ready to apply? Most common questions are answered in the FAQ and in the Puppy Contract, but we are always happy to help with something specific. You can also subscribe to Aussi-eNews for litter announcements, availability and program updates without joining the Waitlist.💵 Current Companion Puppy PricingCompanion puppies are currently $2,000 for tris and $2,500 for merles. Pricing includes sales tax, veterinary wellness examination, individual OFA CAER eye examination, microchip and prepaid AKC Limited Registration. Prices are subject to change and will always be confirmed before you officially choose your puppy. The same thoughtful care goes into every puppy regardless of coat color. The difference in pricing reflects current program pricing- not a difference in health, value, care or importance to us.🐾 Available Puppy or Future Waitlist? If a puppy is available after Waitlist selections have been completed, that puppy will be listed on our Available Pups page and inside the Inquiry. Availability can change quickly and is not guaranteed until an approved family completes the required reservation process.Families who are committed to a Silverside Aussie but are waiting for the right litter, timing or puppy may join our one Master Waitlist with a $500 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT. The Waitlist gives you a Pick Position across future litters instead of requiring you to start over each time.
One Waitlist, flexible timing & Pick Positions that continue improving until you choose your puppy.Finding the right puppy should not feel rushed. Our Master Waitlist is designed to give approved families flexibility while keeping puppy selection fair and transparent.🐾 One Master Waitlist for All Upcoming LittersSilverside uses one Master Waitlist rather than creating a new list for every breeding. Once approved, your $500 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT secures the next available Pick# at the end of the Waitlist. Your Pick Position is based on the date your deposit is received and continues across future litters until you officially choose a puppy, request a refund or are removed under the program terms. The deposit reserves your position in line- not a particular litter, color, gender or puppy. As families ahead of you choose puppies, request refunds or otherwise leave the Waitlist, your position naturally moves upward.💵 The $500 REFUNDABLE DEPOSITIt is accepted only for approved homes. It secures your Pick# on the Master Waitlist. It remains refundable until you officially choose a specific puppy.Once you choose your puppy, it is applied toward the purchase price and the sale becomes subject to the Puppy Contract. If your application is not approved, the deposit will be refunded. The deposit helps us maintain a realistic Waitlist made up of families who are genuinely committed to our program, while the refundable period gives families room to wait for the right timing and puppy without being trapped in a decision made months- or years- earlier.🤔 DREAMER, 😍 SEEKER or 🤩 PICK LITTERThese labels help us understand your timing; they do not change the date of your Pick Position.🤔 DREAMER - You know you want a Silverside Aussie someday, but you are not actively participating in current litters. Dreamers are automatically Passed until they update to Seeker.😍 SEEKER - You are actively looking- usually within the next several months- and want to participate in each upcoming litter’s early Pick/Pass process.🤩 PICK LITTER - You are ready now and hope to pick a puppy from a currently available litter. Your actual puppy options still depend on your Pick Position and which puppies remain available at your turn.📣 Pregnancy & Litter NotificationsWe notify Waitlist families when a pregnancy is confirmed and again when a litter is born. Dreamers have time to become Seekers, and Seekers can decide whether the pairing and timing work for their family.🐶 Early Pick/Pass Is Interest- not Final Puppy SelectionDuring the early weeks, Seekers are asked to Pick or Pass on the litter. PICK means you would like to remain in consideration and believe you may accept a puppy from that pairing. PASS means you would rather wait for a future litter. Passing does not remove you from the Master Waitlist or send you to the bottom.Early Pick/Pass helps us understand participation, likely Pick Positions and timing. It does not assign newborn puppies. Final puppy selection happens around 6–7 weeks after evaluations, veterinary wellness examinations and individual OFA CAER eye examinations are complete.⏳ How Long Will I Wait?We can provide estimates based on your Pick Position, preferences, planned pairings and the number of active Seekers ahead of you, but we cannot guarantee a puppy within a specific litter or timeframe. Litter size, sex, color, tails, timing and the choices made by earlier families are all determined by Mother Nature and individual family decisions. The more flexible you are about color, gender, tail and exact timing, the sooner you are likely to find a wonderful match. Families with very specific requirements may wait longer- and that is perfectly okay if those details truly matter to your household.🔄 Can I Update, Pause or Pass?Absolutely. You may update preferences whenever life changes. Dreamers remain safely on the list without receiving every Pick/Pass request. Seekers may Pass any litter and retain their position. Even after participating in a litter, you may make a final Pass at Puppy Selection if none of the available puppies feels right. Our goal is not to move people through the Waitlist as quickly as possible. It is to help each family choose the right puppy when the timing is right.
You choose at your Pick Position- with evaluations, our guidance & meaningful information in front of you.Every puppy is special, but not every puppy is the right fit for every family. There is no single “best” puppy. There is only the puppy whose developing temperament, energy, confidence and needs fit your household best.🩺 Why We Wait Until Around 6–7 WeeksNewborn puppies are adorable, but they have not had enough time to show us who they are. Choosing at birth would ask families to make one of the biggest decisions of the next 12–15 years based primarily on color and a very tiny photograph.By approximately 6–7 weeks, we have spent hundreds of hours caring for and observing the litter, and each puppy has completed or is completing:Temperament and confidence observationsAge-appropriate structural and movement evaluationComprehensive veterinary wellness examinationIndividual OFA CAER eye examinationGrowth, health and developmental reviewWeeks of socialization, enrichment and individual interaction🧠 What We ObserveWe look at the whole puppy, including confidence, recovery from new experiences, energy, affection, independence, problem-solving, willingness to engage, interaction with people, play style with littermates and developing structure. No puppy needs to score “perfectly.” We are learning what makes each puppy unique and which environments may help them thrive.❤️ Who Actually Chooses the Puppy?Families choose in Waitlist Pick Position order. When it is your turn, you may select any puppy still available to your position or Pass and remain on the Master Waitlist for a future litter. We will share everything we have observed and may strongly recommend the puppy we believe best fits your goals, experience, household and existing animals. Our role is to guide you- not quietly assign a puppy you did not choose. We want you to understand why one puppy may be easier, more challenging or simply better suited than another.🛡️ Silverside Retains Final Approval of Every PlacementYour ability to choose does not remove our responsibility to protect the puppy. Silverside retains final approval and may decline or cancel a placement before transfer if concerns arise regarding honesty, safety, suitability, animal welfare or compliance with the Puppy Contract. This is intended for genuine placement concerns- not to override an approved family's preference simply because another puppy was our first recommendation.🎨 Can I Choose Based on Color, Gender, Eyes or Tail?Of course you may have preferences! Aussies are known for their beautiful variety, and dreaming about a blue merle, red tri, natural bobtail or particular gender is part of the fun. Your preferences help us understand what you hope to find.We simply encourage families to decide which preferences are truly required and which are flexible. Temperament lasts long after the puppy fluff fades. A puppy who checks every visual box but does not fit your household may be far less joyful than the unexpected puppy whose personality feels like they were always meant to be yours.🌟 What If My Favorite Puppy Is Still Available? Then you may choose that puppy. Sometimes our recommendation and the family's favorite are the same. Sometimes a family learns more and falls in love with a completely different puppy. And sometimes, after hearing all of our guidance, a family still feels strongly about one particular available puppy. So long as we do not have a serious welfare or placement concern, the final selection at that Pick Position belongs to the family.🤔 What If None of the Puppies Is Right?Pass. Truly. Choosing a puppy should never feel like accepting the last option because it is your turn. A final Pass keeps you on the Master Waitlist so you can participate in a future litter. Waiting a little longer is far better than spending the next decade wondering whether the match was right.🐾 What Happens After Waitlist Picks?Any puppies not selected by participating Waitlist families may become available to approved public homes after selections are complete. At that point, the puppy's profile, evaluations, health information, pricing and travel-ready date will be available so an approved family can make an informed decision without joining for a future litter.
Clear expectations protect the puppy, the family & the future of all Silverside Aussies.Every approved buyer must read and agree to the Silverside Aussies Puppy Contract before completing a purchase. The FAQ explains our program in everyday language; the signed Contract contains the controlling legal terms, warranties, remedies and responsibilities.💵 Current Puppy PricingCompanion puppies are currently priced at:🩷 Red or Black Tri - $2,000🖤❤️ Red or Blue Merle - $2,500🩵Pricing includes Virginia sales tax, a comprehensive veterinary wellness examination, an individual OFA CAER eye examination, a Fi microchip with free lifetime registration, age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming, and prepaid AKC Limited Registration. Puppies also go home with ASDR Limited Registration paperwork, medical records, pet-insurance offers, their Silverside starter items, our 2-year Wellness Warranty, and lifetime support. The same thoughtful planning, veterinary care, health testing, socialization, and daily attention go into every Silverside puppy regardless of coat color. The difference in pricing reflects our current program pricing - not a difference in the puppy’s health, quality, care, or importance to us.A $500 REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT secures an approved family’s Pick Position on our Master Waitlist. The deposit remains refundable until the family officially chooses a specific puppy. Once a puppy is chosen, the deposit is applied toward the purchase price, and the remaining balance must be paid in full before the puppy is released from Silverside’s care.Prices are subject to change, but your puppy’s total price will always be confirmed before you officially make your selection.💵 Deposits, Cancellation & Refunds After Puppy SelectionThe $500 Deposit remains refundable while it is holding a Master Waitlist position. Once a family officially chooses a specific puppy, the deposit is applied toward the purchase price becoming a reservation fee and becomes subject to the cancellation, liquidated-damages, refund and warranty provisions in the signed Puppy Contract. Please read those terms before selecting your puppy and ask questions before agreeing.🛡️ Final Placement ApprovalSilverside reserves final approval over every placement until transfer. We may decline or cancel a sale when information changes or concerns arise regarding dishonesty, unsafe conditions, suitability, contract compliance or the puppy's welfare. The family is never required to accept a puppy and may Pass or decline, but no puppy is released until both parties are comfortable proceeding under the Contract.📄 Companion Puppies Are Placed on Limited RegistrationOur companion puppies are placed with AKC and ASDR Limited Registration- not because we believe they are “lesser” dogs, but because breeding should never be an automatic right that comes with purchasing a puppy.Ethical breeding requires much more than a beautiful pedigree. It takes proven temperament, sound structure, breed-appropriate health testing, maturity, careful evaluation and a genuine commitment to improving the Australian Shepherd breed. Limited Registration helps us protect our puppies from being bred without those important safeguards while still documenting their purebred lineage. All registration documents and titled names must retain the SILVERSIDE kennel prefix in accordance with the Puppy Contract.Limited Registration does not limit the life you can build with your Aussie. Silverside puppies can still train, compete, earn titles and participate in a wide variety of companion and performance activities, including obedience, rally, agility, trick dog, Canine Good Citizen, Fast CAT, dock diving, scent work, barn hunt, herding and so much more. Our puppies are first and foremost placed to be deeply loved family members- and a companion dog can still be an incredibly talented, accomplished and exceptional Australian Shepherd. ❤️🎗️ AKC Title ReimbursementWe love seeing Silverside Aussies learn, compete and earn accomplishments with their families. Silverside offers reimbursement for qualifying AKC titles in accordance with the Puppy Contract. Documentation of the completed title and any other required information must be submitted to receive reimbursement.🏆 Full Registration Is Not Sold AutomaticallyFull registration and breeding rights are never guaranteed and are not granted simply because a family pays more at puppy pickup. We have seen firsthand how quickly a promising puppy can be bred too young, without complete health testing, appropriate evaluation or a thoughtful mate. That is not the legacy we want for any Silverside dog.For very special dogs with very driven, committed owners, a future conversion may be considered for a written co-ownership & mentorship arrangement only after the dog matures and demonstrates the health, structure, temperament and accomplishments required by Silverside. Requirements may include appropriate AKC titles, CHIC/OFA testing after maturity, comprehensive DNA testing, veterinary care, evaluation of the proposed mate, payment of an additional breeding-rights fee, & written approval before any authorized breeding occurs. Consideration never guarantees approval!✂️ Thoughtful Spay & Neuter DecisionsCompanion puppies are placed with the understanding that they will not be bred. However, we do not believe every dog should be spayed or neutered according to the same automatic timeline. When a family can safely and responsibly prevent an accidental breeding, we generally support allowing an Aussie time to mature physically before alteration, typically 18-24 months for males & up to 3 years for females. The most appropriate timing may vary based on the individual dog’s sex, development, health, lifestyle and home environment, so this decision should be made thoughtfully with a veterinarian who understands the benefits and considerations of delayed spaying or neutering.Preventing pregnancy remains the buyer’s responsibility at all times, including during heat cycles and around intact dogs. Your Puppy Contract contains the specific requirements for your puppy and should be reviewed with your veterinarian before making any alteration decisions. EARLY SPAY/NEUTER VOIDS WARRANTIES unless medically necessary.🏡 If You Can No Longer Keep Your DogNo Silverside puppy or dog may be sold, surrendered, transferred or privately rehomed without first contacting Silverside and receiving any prior written approval required by the Puppy Contract. We understand that life can change, and asking for help is not a failure. Early communication gives us the best chance to support the family, review the dog's history, help create a safe plan and prevent a Silverside dog from entering an unknown placement or shelter system. Our return and rehoming requirements are about protecting the dog- not shaming the person who reaches out. Owners, relatives, veterinarians, trainers, groomers, caregivers, rescues and anyone acting on the dog's behalf are welcome to contact us.
South Hill, Virginia • At least 8 weeks old • Travel-ready • Pickup typically completed within 7 days.Gotcha Day is one of our favorite days! It is exciting, emotional and usually a little bittersweet after spending every day with the puppies. Clear scheduling helps us prepare the puppy, records, starter kit and the rest of the litter's care without rushing anyone.📍 Where Is Silverside Aussies?Silverside Aussies is located in South Hill, Virginia, about 12 miles north of the North Carolina border. Richmond, Virginia and Raleigh, North Carolina are each roughly a 1.5-hour drive, and RIC and RDU are the nearest major airports. For the safety and privacy of our human and canine family, our exact home address is provided directly to approved families on the morning of their Puppy Pickup- not posted publicly.📅 When Can My Puppy Come Home?Puppies cannot leave before eight weeks of age and must be deemed travel-ready. Families agree to pick up in South Hill within seven days after the puppy becomes travel-ready, or within seven days of reserving a puppy who is already travel-ready. This anticipated timeframe may change if the veterinarian recommends additional time, the puppy is not fully weaned, travel conditions are unsafe or we otherwise believe remaining with us is temporarily in the puppy's best interest. Puppy welfare comes before a calendar date.👋 Can I Visit Before Gotcha Day?To protect young puppies from parvovirus and other contagious diseases- and to preserve the quiet, uninterrupted time needed for feeding, cleaning, veterinary care, socialization, and development- we do not offer routine public visits with unvaccinated litters. Approved families typically meet their puppy at scheduled pickup, while already travel-ready available puppies may sometimes be met by appointment when appropriate. We know waiting to meet your puppy can be hard, so we work very hard to help you feel connected from a safe distance! Each puppy has a detailed profile with regularly updated photo and video albums, developmental pup-dates, medical records, and information about their parents. Families can also explore the parents’ profiles, health testing, photo albums, previous puppies, and litter information to better understand what their puppy may be like as they grow. We are happy to schedule a phone or video call when a question cannot be answered through the puppy’s profile or when a family would benefit from seeing and discussing the puppies in real time. You can also learn a great deal about life with a Silverside Aussie through our reviews, owner stories, our Silverside Album, past-puppy updates, and once you join the waitlist, you can request access to the Silverside Woof Pack on Facebook, where families share photos, milestones, adventures, training progress, and the wonderfully ordinary moments that make these dogs so special. We’ve even had some families arrange play dates! We want families to feel informed, included, and confident in their decision- even when the safest way to love the puppies is from a little distance until Gotcha Day. 🩵💵 When Is the Remaining Balance Due?The remaining balance must be paid in full before the puppy is released from the care and ownership of Silverside Aussies. Payment may be completed before or during Puppy Pickup with CASH or CARD (additional fees for digital payments). Any required processing charge, transportation expense, medical travel certificate or other additional fee must also be paid before transfer. NO ALTERNATE FORMS OF PAYMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. Failure to complete pickup within the required timeframe may result in additional care or boarding charges, cancellation of the placement or other remedies described in the Puppy Contract.Families may make advance payments toward their balance when arranged, but the written payment, cancellation and refund terms in the Puppy Contract control after a specific puppy has been selected.🚗 Pickup & Third-Party TransportationAll Silverside Aussies must be picked up in South Hill, VA & we do not offer routine delivery or transportation at this time. Our dogs, puppies, and human children depend on us at home, which makes extended travel very difficult. Very occasionally, our own travel happens to align with a family's route, but this is rare, entirely at our discretion and never guaranteed. The puppy and all related charges must be paid in full before leaving our care.🩺 Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)Some airlines, states or transport providers require an additional Certificate of Veterinary Inspection or health certificate. This requires another veterinary appointment and is not included in the standard puppy price. The buyer is responsible for the examination, certificate and any transportation-related costs. Requirements and veterinary pricing can change, so confirm them before booking travel.🧼 Protecting Your Puppy During TravelYour puppy will leave Silverside with age-appropriate vaccinations, but they will not yet be fully protected at eight weeks old. Their puppy vaccination series must continue with your veterinarian, so extra care is needed during travel and throughout those first weeks at home. Until your veterinarian confirms it is safe, avoid places where unknown dogs frequently walk or relieve themselves, including public pet-relief areas, dog parks, pet-store floors, rest-stop grass, apartment dog areas, and the ground around veterinary clinics. Parvovirus can remain in contaminated environments, and veterinary organizations recommend caution in places where dogs gather until the initial vaccination series is complete. For the ride home, bring a secure crate or carrier, clean bedding, water, a bowl, paper towels, waste bags, disposable puppy pads, and extra blankets in case of an accident. Plan stops carefully and avoid setting your puppy down in areas heavily used by other animals. For longer trips, a clean disposable pad placed in a protected area will be safer than using a public pet-relief station. We recommend following a “paws-off-ground” approach during travel. This does not mean your puppy must be hidden away from the world- it simply means keeping their paws off shared public ground while still allowing them to safely experience new sights, sounds, people, vehicles, and environments. Carry your puppy, keep them inside a clean crate or carrier, use a puppy stroller or shopping cart lined with your own clean blanket, or place them only on a clean surface you brought from home. Do not allow strangers to place your puppy on the ground or introduce them to unknown dogs, even if those dogs appear healthy.Safe socialization should still continue. Your puppy can be carried through new places, watch the world from the car or a clean blanket, meet new people without touching public ground, and interact with healthy, appropriately vaccinated dogs in controlled environments approved by your veterinarian. Your puppy’s medical records and Gotcha Day instructions will explain when their next vaccinations are due, but your own veterinarian should help you choose the safest plan based on local disease risk and your puppy’s individual needs.
